Vegan Charity Launches New Website to Help People Go Dairy-Free

All you need to know about dairy

Vegan charity Viva! has launched its new Scary Dairy website to educate the public about the realities of the dairy industry and to help people transition to dairy-free diets.

The Scary Dairy website provides comprehensive information about the health benefits associated with ditching dairy alongside quick nutritional facts about going dairy-free. The website features emotive videos and detailed reports about the suffering that dairy cows and goats endure – ensuring that all areas of the dairy industry are covered.

Scary Dairy also offers advice about sourcing plant-based milk, cheese, ice-cream and other popular dairy products – tailored to suit all budgets. The delicious recipes are supported by Vegan Recipe Club, the charity’s online resource and app which aims to make going and staying vegan even easier.

The website features beautifully designed graphics and has clear site navigation to take visitors through everything they need to know about dairy. The website supports users at every stage of their dairy-free journey, offering numerous free downloadable resources and literature, including the colourful ‘Going Dairy-Free Super Pack’

The Scary Dairy website comes as Viva! launches the final phase in its yearlong campaign to highlight the dark side of the dairy industry. The TRASH campaign takes centre stage on the website homepage and aims to raise awareness of the forgotten victims of the dairy industry – male calves. Around two million dairy calves are born in the UK each year. Male calves are a ‘useless by-product’ of the dairy industry and so 95,000 male calves are shot in a year as the dairy industry’s trash [1].

Juliet Gellatley, founder and director of Viva! explains the purpose of the website:

“Although the public are beginning to open their eyes to the reality of the dairy industry, many people still believe that dairy cows and goats live an idyllic lifestyle. Some will be shocked to learn that in order to produce milk an animal first needs to be pregnant. The calves are cruelly ripped away from their mothers just hours after birth. Male calves are either shot in the head or sold to the veal and beef industry, whilst female calves follow the same fate as their mothers – an endless cycle of forced impregnation until an early death at often just five years old.

Going dairy-free is one of the most natural changes to your diet. Why? Simply because drinking milk past infancy is not what nature intended. We’re the only species in the world to do so and what’s more, we consume milk of a different animal! There’s so much research on the consequences of consuming milk and dairy products on human health, you have only to scratch the surface to learn the truth.

Our new website is a fantastic resource to teach the public about the practices which are standard across the UK dairy industry. The resources are easily accessible and address many common misconceptions about dairy-free diets. The purpose of this website is to make it as simple as possible to transition away from dairy and to try plant-based products. With so many alternatives readily available, there has never been a better time to try dairy-free.”
